The use of medicinal plants dates back to the Paleolithic age, approximately 60,000 years ago. Written evidence of herbal remedies dates back over 5,000 years to the Sumerians, who compiled lists of plants and their medical uses in books called herbals.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 80 percent of the Asian and African populations presently use herbal medicine for some aspect of primary health care. Some prescription drugs have a basis as herbal remedies, including artemisinin, digitalis, and quinine.

Herbal medicine (also herbalism) is the study of pharmacognosy and the use of medicinal plants which are a basis of traditional medicine.  The scope of herbal medicine commonly includes fungal and bee products, as well as minerals, shells, and certain animal parts. Herbal medicine is also called phytomedicine or phytotherapy.

Herbal Medicine is a daily treatment protocol. The herbs are selected to address your constitution and your pattern of disharmony. The root and underlying cause of the symptoms can be addressed, as well as the branch or symptoms produced by the root etiology.

Herbal formulas are constructed individually by diagnosing a Chinese Medicine pattern of disharmony. Patterns of disharmony address imbalances in the system by tongue diagnosis and pulse diagnosis. The practitioner will also want to know the symptoms that you desire to address. Herbal formulas can treat patterns of disharmony that translate into the onset of cold and flu, pain, sleeplessness, digestive, and mood regulation. The formulas are individually tailored for your symptoms and the root cause of your symptoms.

The steps to herbal therapy include treatment of symptoms (branch), and the underlying imbalance in the system which manifests as symptoms. Treatment progression moves from treating the acute symptoms to treatment of chronic issues, and then maintenance. Herbal formulas are tailored for each step in the progression. Herbal therapy is a gentle and effective means of restoring health.
